Description
In two parts, first part Ross is asked to file, second part marked private. Complains that there was no-one to meet him when he landed at Accra although he had cabled to say he was coming earlier and that he has been given half a dirty bungalow as his quarters. He has been taken round the town and describes the conditions. Complains about the equipment and staffing and that the salaries offered are no inducement. In the second half of the letter he says that he told the governor that he would want more money to do other than inspect Cape Coast and that he had better apply for a sanitary inspector to supervise the mosquito brigades, adding that his salary is too small at £800 to live comfortably. He intends to inspect Cape Coast in January and the mines in February and will probably return to England in the Spring as there is a risk of his being taken ill. He does not want it said that he has come to the Gold Coast (now Ghana) to improve the sanitation as ML Taylor is doing in Freetown.
