Date1999-2009
DescriptionCorrespondence, printed online news articles, press cuttings, articles, memoranda and reports relating to the HIV/AIDS situation in South Africa. The files document the UNAIDS response to the epidemic over these years and document several significant flashpoints such as the South African government's setting up of an independent panel of experts to research the link between the HIV virus and AIDS; the Pretoria High Court ruling against the government to supply Nevirapine to pregnant women in December 2001 and the treatment action campaign (TAC) demonstrations against the South African government's AIDS health policy, including a copy of an affidavit from their high court case against the government. The file contains a number of reports including a report entitled 'National HIV and Syphilis Antenatal Sero-Prevalence Survey in South Africa 2004' by the South African Department of Health and a Cochrane report, entitled 'Benefits and risks of interventions aimed at reducing mother-to-child transmission of HIV infection' prepared for the South African Minister of Health, Dr M E Tshabalala-Msimang, produced on 24 December 1999.

The file also contains briefing notes for Piot's 2006 trip to Cape Town and prepared reports on the demographic impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country.
