Title
Investigation of chronic bronchitis in the Civil Service
Date
1950-1958
Description
Research project investigating chronic bronchitis within the Civil Service, primarily focusing on the affect of air pollution on rates of infection. The project grew out of an earlier investigation conducted by Dr Victor Medvei (1905-2000), Treasury Medical Officer, on rates of bronchitis in Civil Service. The research was later expanded with the help of Dr Donald Reid, Department of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The investigation selected several locations around London, including London Airport (now Heathrow Airport), Euston Station, Waterloo Station and Mount Pleasance postal office and one rural location, Thetford Forest Forestry Commission. From 1953-1957, the survey team collected sickness absence reports relating to bronchitis along with air pollution readings and meteorological data for each site.
