Description
Documents chiefly relating to preliminary investigation of AIDS epidemic in Kinshasa that later evolved into Projet SIDA, Zairian-American-Belgian research program that began in 1984 to study the AIDS epidemic. The project was based in the Mama Yemo Hospital, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (then known as the Republic of Zaire). The file contains notebooks and notes by Peter Piot; correspondence files, budget and personal notes; documents relating to the aims, objectives and management of the project; research notes and questionnaires and medical statistics and patient case notes. The records document the work carried out by the Peter Piot led Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp work on Projet SIDA and are written mostly in French and Dutch whilst general Projet SIDA project documentation are written in English reflecting the US investment in the project.
