Title
Stanley Hong Kong civilian internment camp papers
Date
1942-1945
Description
Material includes lists of patients suffering from nutritional diseases in the Stanley civilian internment camp, reports by Dr Dean Smith concerning rations, inadequacy of nutritional standards in the camp and the resulting diseases suffered by the internees. The papers originate from Dr Dean Smith's role as nutrition officer for the civilian internment camp, Stanley. There are papers from the nutrition clinic such as monthly nutrition reports, ration lists, reports concerning particular nutritional problems. In addition, there are reports by the British Community Council and documents issued by the Representative of Internees such as memoranda and reports to them from Dean Smith.
The most detailed records are from the nutrition clinic which was established in March 1942 and continued to work up until the liberation of the camp in August 1945. Many of the papers concern ration scales, cases of nutritional disease in the camp and detailed accounts of work carried out to relieve the situation. There are memos from the International Welfare Committee and minutes of the Central Medical Panel meetings which Dean Smith attended. As a member of the Central Medical Panel, which was set up in 1944, Dr Smith worked closely with other officers such as Dr Valentine, Dr Uttley, Dr Court and Mr Butters.
For the most part the records are administrative and almost completely derive from the nutrition clinic and Central Medical Panel. There are some minutes from the Central Relief Committee meetings. There are no patient records contained in this sub-series, only general lists and statistics.
