Description
Correspondence and related material regarding the South African government, led by President Tbado Mbeki response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa. The file provides a context of this epidemic with collected material of South African government, medical and political activists' response to the situation. It also contains UNAIDS involvement in lobbying the Mbeki government with direct correspondence, meeting notes and statements between Peter Piot and Thabo Mbeki.
Papers also include a number of newspaper and journal articles documenting the AIDS situation in South Africa; statements from the South African Ministry of Health; statements from Mbeki and article regarding South African Constitutional Court verdict stating HIV causes AIDS; background briefing and talking points of UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan's meeting with President Thabo Mbeki; African National Congress (ANC) Executive statement and speeches regarding the epidemic; articles relating to AIDS denialism including printed out article entitled 'HIV-AIDS hypothesis out of touch with South African AIDS- A new perspective by Peter H Duesberg, Joshua M Nicholson, David Rasnick, Chirtian Fiala and Henry H Bauer in Medical Hypotheses, 11 June 2009 and article entitled 'The Duesberg Phenomenon" in Science, Vol 266, 9 December 1994.
Correspondence include a copy of a letter from Thabo Mbeki to Dr Gro Haslem Brundthand, Director-General of the World Health Organisation; correspondence with the campaign group, Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) action against the South African government to change their HIV/AIDS health policy and notes from the UN Secretary-General's meeting with Piot on the South African epidemic from Dakar, 26 April 2000.
